Bike lost in transit, airline not responding

Hi there,

At Christmas my bike never arrived in Dakar, coming from Dublin via Istanbul and Turkish Airlines every few days since belatedly reply that it's being looked for and thank me for my patience, as opposed to settling, or even acknowledging the claim made a month ago. Would anyone have tips on how to nudge this along? There's travel insurance, but that turns out to have a maximum of €400 per item, which won't replace a Surly Long Haul Trucker. Anyone with dealings re Turkish Airlines or an approach that worked elsewhere? I put a # on twitter, but with a grand total of 16 followers I don't have much muscle, so any help would be terrific.

The carrier is liable to pay

The carrier is liable to pay a set amount for lost baggage items under the Warsaw or Montreal conventions (there is a pretty paltry limit per kilo under the Warsaw convention). Make all your claims in writing, there are time limits which may have already passed if you have not done this. Either way you will not be reimbursed to anything close to the value of your bike (that's why an extensive travel insurance plan costs money).

Thanks, Paul. Will keep at

Thanks, Paul. Will keep at Turkish Airlines, then hope the travel insurance closes the gap towards the actual replacement cost. Will have to check out additional insurance before travelling again. Appreciate your taking an interest.
Best,
Francis

No problems, never let up,

No problems, never let up, ask for everything in paper or the full name of whoever you are talking to. But first you should enquire to which convention they are bound, if it is the Warsaw convention it may not be worth your time although it may be a prerequisite to claim on your travel insurance. Air France lost a bag of mine in the middle of a tour in Abidjan - what I got out of them after much persistence was a night in a 5 star hotel and small change. I can't remember how much it was exactly but it was pathetic, luckily insurance covered all the difference.

Hi

Hi

Email members of the board and tell them, they do not like negative feedback on their airline and someone will reply. We flew to Thailand last year and bikes arrived but one full set of panniers and luggage didn't. Bangkok were pretty useless but an email to the CEO of BA worked and within a day we had a reply and our bags were found and delivered to our hotel.

Check this site and you will find all the emails of the board members:

Good luck

You say that that it "Turns

You say that that it "Turns out" that the travel insurance only pays out $400'for lost items. I would suggest that that was pretty clear in the policy and you either failed to notice it or chose to risk it.. Making sure your bike is adquately insured on a Tour is the first thing you should arrange. I hope your bike turns up.

Lonely Planet Forums

When an airline fatally damaged my bike and failed to respond I went to the Lonely Planet Forum and posted a thread there. There are lots of people with good advice to offer which helped. Also, having let the airline know what I had done, they changed their attitude immediately, paid all my incidental expenses and paid the full cost of my bike.
