Hey guys. My first Bike tour is fast approaching and I'm finalising various bits and bobs. Several friends and family members have asked me how they'll be able to track my progress, partly due to interest, partly due to safety, and partly due to a couple of them not believing i won't catch a train instead of cycling...! I've done a bit of internet research but not found a really good tracking app I can download so people can see where I am.
Has anybody got any advice or experience on this??
Cheers.
You should try OruxMaps. For me is the best.
I used the trackmytour application and everyone who followed me enjoyed it ! It can be used on or off line while you are riding. Have a great trip !!
Ive found one called Track My Trip but cant find Track my Tour...?!?
I have used Spot Connect the past four trips and it worked well. Does not use cell towers or wifi which are useless in the middle of nowhere. It plots my progress every ten minutes on a map that anyone can follow on-line. You buy a unit for $100 or so and then pay a yearly fee of $150. It comes with an alert SOS via a satellite in the event you need help. This feature was the most desired by my family.
Strava
Does this offer "live" tracking for other non-Strava users to follow?
for any Apps that work on a phone, you need signal, often touring cyclist does not have this luxury.
You really need a SPOT, it sends email to a dedicated email address you gave them when you press a button on the device.

Strava Beacon - https://www.strava.com/premium/live/beacon
Garmin Livetrack - http://www8.garmin.com/livetrack/
Get a GPS device that has crash detection (garmin 820, 1000), in case you have an accident, your loved ones will be notified.
I am using Strava app. I am currently on tour in going from Germany to Korea. Check out my routes! I have tracked every ride.
You can also create routes with elevation profiles on strava

I plan to use track my tour, you can post picks and comments... perfect.
premium strava users can let 2-3 others strava users track people in real time.
If you all have a Google or Google+ account and you are using a mobile phone or connecting to WiFi from time to time, you can share your real time location with chosen contacts. I and a small group of friends all share our real time locations with each other and it's very simple.
Road ID has part of their new app called ecrumbs. It allows your friends and family to track you in real time, on a map, when you head outdoors for an adventure (run, ride, hike, walk, etc). https://play.google.com/store/apps/details? id=com.roadid.ecrumb.app&rdid=com.roadid.ecrumb.app
