India to Europe updated info?

Hello Everyone!
I'm circumnavigating without ever using a motor and I'm working on a route from India to Europe. Ive heard that cyclists are forced to have police escorts or get on a bus in Pakistan, Iran, and Afghanistan. Does anyone have updated information on this? Can you recommend alternative routes? I have read the forum from 4 years ago and hoping to hear something has changed. All the best from www.routesofchange.org. Markus

You might want to ask on

You might want to ask on Lonely Planet’s Thorn Tree forum, as there you will have a larger pool of people to consult. However, I would be very surprised if you were even allowed to transit Balochistan after that Spanish cyclist got attacked (and his armed guard killed?) three years ago. Balochistan is still a lawless province; nothing has changed in that regard. Another thing to keep in mind is that Pakistan normally requires people to apply for the Pakistani visa in their home country, not abroad.

The standard alternative route is up the Karakoram Highway from Pakistan to China, then into Kazakhstan or Kyrgyzstan, and then further through Central Asia and Iran (or taking the Caspian Sea ferry, or – worst and rarest choice of all – transiting Russia). The Karakoram is only open seasonally, however, and getting a Chinese visa can also be a hassle if you tell the embassy that you are cycling.

Thanks Christopher,

Thanks Christopher,
I had heard about the Pakistan visa. I have two passports to make that work. I also already have my China visa. I'd actually prefer to do the Karakoram Highway but I had heard you need to board a bus. I can't do that. Thanks for the tips!
