Hi everyone

Has any in the last month applied for a Chinese visa from Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan or Kyrgyzstan.

I'm in Georgia and am going to be very stuck soon.

Thanks

Send your passport back to

Send your passport back to your home country by DHL. The Chinese government generally prefers that people apply in their home country.

Also, don’t mention that you are cycling; any suggestion you will enter China in the politically sensitive region of Xinjiang means automatic refusal at many consulates. Book refundable plane tickets and pretend you are going to fly in and out of eastern China like a good tourist. The visa, once issued, will then allow you to enter overland.

visa

Last I heard you could not get a visa for china in those countries. They know you are headed either for Xinjiang or Tibet and do not want you there. You need to apply in your home county and prepare a fake itineray with tickets and hotel reservations. A travel agent can do this for you for a small fee. If you have a US pasport you can get a 10 year visa this way.

Mailing the pasport home might work, but a friend of ours got skunked when they closely checked his pasport in London and figured out he did not have a Kazahkstan exit stamp, therfore he was not in London. They refused his visa. DHL back and forth cost him some money.

Sorry I do not have better news for you,

Patrick

I agree with the other

I agree with the other responders. Regardless of which passport you hold, forget getting the visa outside of your "supposed" country of residence. Chinese asume you live in the country of your passport and there your visa should be issued without delay. Safe yourself the headache and find a country that allows a stay long enough for the passport to be shipped "home", the visa be issued and be shipped back. On your way through central asia that place would be kirgyzstan! Or, depending also mongolia. Be prepared for questions as to how you got your visa without beeing back home. It took me 3 hours of questioning to explain to the chinese that passports can be send by post!

But what about Hong Kong? I guess If you are in HK, you may personally apply for a Chinese visa there and receive it.

Hi piotr. Well first, the fellow who initially asked the question is going eastbound, so hk is of little use for him.
That aside, three years ago i would have agreed with you. Hk was easy and fast for everyone. This has changed!!! For some passports and depending on your travel history it may still be a good place, BUT there have been more and more refusals lately. There is never a satisfying reason.
Its hard to see a pattern but it seems as if its easier to get a visa if in the past you have had one (and did not get into troubble). China seems to be indergoing mayor policy changes. Who knows if it will ever get back to be predictable. Just now, to me, it seems a mess and the only reliable way is to have it done in your country of origin or residence.
Just as a sidenote: the above is also true for visaextencions once inside china. You can not count on the extencion anymore: hope for the best, be prepared for a fast exit! Very anoying when on a bicycle!!
Kind regards
Carlos

Stuck, either way

Have you goven much thought to the continental winter! As far as see it you will be stuck anyway! Visa or winter, you may have to head south soon. For me iran ( combined with the arab peninsula) was a good way to spend the winter, before resuming eastbound via the stans... Another Pom i met hybernated in bishkek. That would be a neat place to unwind too! ( while your passport is traveling back and forth).
Cheers

I plan to cycle the Mediterranean coast spain to greece then Turkey,  after that I have no idea how I'll be able to get to china as an American.  Maybe not possible?

I find it hard to perceive that I will not be able to recieve a visa to china at border?

I leave USA in 3 weeks but don't plan to be near China till summer time

What do I do?

Thanks

Hi there! Firyst, you are

Hi there! Firyst, you are still a loong way away!
There has never been a china visa on the border (as much as there is none at us borders).
As a us cicizen (however spelled), i would recommend getting the 10 years visa avaiñable for you. Its about the same price as what i pay for one month, and it will give you all the flexibility you need. Get it before you leave!
Besides iran, they will lick your arse in all central asian countries, don't worry!

Off corse you need your

Off corse you need your passport! Why can't you get your chinese visa in three weeks. Send it out to an agent. Within the us it will be a piece of cake. Once out over the water it all becomes sooo much more hasstle! Try it, even if you have to pospone your departure. Believe me: you will wish you had made it!!
In any case, after travelling in central asia you might be well informed when it comes to visas. Its the biggest hastle on that region. Good luck!
