Across Russia May-Oct 2021

Six months to pedal and absorb the landscape, history, and culture of Russia. About 11,000 km in 184 days - split equally between pedalling and absorbing. For example, three days of cycling (120 km each) offset by three days in fabulous places like Kaliningrad, Riga, Talinn, St. Pertersburg, Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan, Samara, Ufa, Chelyabinsk, Yekaterinburg, Tyumen, Omsk, Novosibirsk, Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk, Ulan-Ude, Chita, Khabarovsk, and Vladivostok (proposed route). We'll try to maximise local contact by finding people who can accomodate us for a fee. If that's not possible, then hotel, motel, B&B, Warmshowers, camping, etc. This is about exploring a glorious land and experiencing its varied peoples - wild camping alone does not accopmplish that. Flexible on route and where to stop for how long.

Hi Riaz

this sounds like a stellar tour idea- I would possibly be interested in joining but can forsee visa requirements for a us citizen to be difficult. how are you going about getting a visa for entry?

Re: Visa

Hi Shmuel. I doubt you'll have any problem. Russia and US have a mutual agreement whereby you can apply for a 3-year multiple-entry visa based on which a 180-day entry is granted (see here). They don't accept applications prior to 3 months before first entry, so I haven't yet started the process. I think Covid is a more likely spoiler for this plan. We'll see how things go and update in February. Cheers, Riaz.

Hi Riaz,

What a fantastic tour. I will not be able to do the 6 Monts with you. I still have work. It has been on my mind sice the first time I saw your post. Perhaps I could cycle a bit with you on the Western part. I am pining for something epic like this. Keep me posted.
