Looking for advice on which highway to take from Glenallen to Fairbanks.
I would recommend taking the Richardson Highway (Alaska route 4) north to Delta Junction and then on to Fairbanks (Alaska route 2) if you want all paved road riding. You could also consider riding the Denali Highway east to west (Alaska route 8) from Paxson to Cantwell if you were prepared for gravel road riding then riding north on the Parks Highway (Alaska route 2) to Fairbanks. Curious how you will arrive in Glenallen? Riding up from the south? The highway heading west from Glenallen has some stretches with little shoulder.
Thanks for answering. My plan is to ride from Anchorage to Glenallen on AK1, then up to Fairbanks, then down to Danali NP and back to Anchorage. We prefer to stay on pavement. I was wondering if we should take the Richardson, or go out to Tok and up to Fairbanks on the Alaska Hwy. Also, we will do an our and back from Anchorage to either Homer or Seward, which would you recommend?
Last summer I rode from Fairbanks to Glenallen; I took the the Denali Highway, as suggested by Tami. It was a perfect route, especially the Denali Highway was beautiful and relatively easy to ride on my loaded touring bike.
