Bike saddle

I am heading to California in a couple of weeks, can anyone recommend a comfortable saddle that wears in quickly? I have researched Brooks but not sure if it will be too hard. I have a custom made bike from New Zealand that came with basic men's seat that is painful after 50kms. I live in Brisbane Australia

Don't be out off Brooks

Don't be out off Brooks because they look hard. I love my B17 saddle. Comfortable, breathable, hard earring, it has done 24,000km and is still comfortable and going strong.

They have an amazing amount of give in them and mine was very quick to break in - with no sores. Just make sure you have it tensioned correctly. If it is uncomfortable, it is probably under tensioned as a found - I was effectively sitting on the rails. Painful! Others will have different experiences for sure as, being natural leather, every saddle is unique.

I don't think you will do better than Brooks.

Thanks for feedback Ashley, there is a brooks women's saddle so not sure if better for me (hard for you to comment) I will be in Melbourne over wkd so will try Abbortsfiord bikes. If you can recommend other stores please let me know Fitzroy & Carlton stores are now closed.

Do you use dynamo hubs for lighting & phone charge? I have also heard solar charging is good

We used a solar charger which

We used a solar charger which worked great when it was sunny but I'm not sure that I would use it again. We also cooked it by leaving the battery in huge sun (I knocked the top providing shade off of it and didn't notice) which rendered it useless.

We met a few cyclists with dynamo hubs that had been adapted to charge appliances and next time I go on tour I will definitely be using one of these. It is also smaller and lighter and you don't need to have strong sunlight.

I should also say with the saddle that it was so comfortable that on my UK to NZ trip, I posted all my padded shorts home when we reached Vienna. The seam at the edge of the padding was an irritant and seamless underwear (underarmour) and lightweight shorts were perfect.

I have a B17 Brooks, and it

I have a B17 Brooks, and it was very comfortable from the very beginning. It came with my bike (Raleigh Sojourn). The pressure is mainly on the sit bones (where it should be), and despite being hard it is super comfortable (I have never used any padding). After many long days of biking I sometimes feel the sit bones a tiny bit, but only if I sit on a hard chair (e.g. wood), but not while I'm biking.

A friend of mine bought another type of B17 (hers is a bit narrower in the very back and wider in the middle) and she complains how uncomfortable it is (and blames me for it ;-). So maybe my version is the touring version of the B17.

Good luck finding a saddle!

bike store & local phone pre-paid?

Hello Asa,

thanks for feedback on saddle - did you purchase a women's saddle? Do you know where I could purchase this in LA? Do you know if I can buy local phone charge in USA?

LA bike store

thanks for all the feedback on brooks saddle & phone charger. Does anyone know a bike store in LA where I could buy & have these items installed in? I am flying in 14th Oct

La bike store

Byndie.
There's a great place in Long Beach (just outside LA) I always go to. The Bicycle Stand. Great shop with an amazing and super knowledgable owner. Specializes in all things steel frame. Touring especially. Where I go for all of my equipment. Plus he lets anyone prop their bike up on the shops stands and do their own installs or repairs. Assortment of brooks saddles. Have you looked into the selle anatomica? My newest and most favorite thing on my bike.

There are countless bike stores in Los Angeles. Unfortunately most carry the same manufacturers. True touring saddles like brooks aren't going to be in most of them.

If you're in LA with no saddle... I actually have a spare brooks b17 imperial I don't use that id be more than happy to loan or barter or sell.

Good luck with your trip!! Maybe I'll see you out there.

Hii Raymond,

Thanks for information on bike stores, I am looking for Schmidt dynamo hub, lights & power II charger which are very expensive in Australia. Do you know if these are able to be purchased & installed in LA? I would be happy to buy brooks saddle from you, can you email pic & price? Why are you selling it?

Do you know if I can buy prepaid phone card for iPhone in LA?

LA

Schmidt hubs aren't cheap. Relative statement. @ $300+ USD. Depending on model of course.
The problem you might face is availability. From my experience, most bike stores wouldn't have such a specialized/high end product in stock. However....almost all stores would be more than happy to place order for you and assist or install product for you when it arrives. And most stores will match any price you might find.
If time is an issue, calling ahead and placing the order so that it would be there upon your arrival might be a good idea. Shipment usually takes 3-5 business days. With your story and what you're trying to do, I would hope that most stores would be willing to assist. I'm positive that Evan, the owner of The Bicycle Stand, would not only be willing, but enthusiastic to help you out. I'm heading into his shop Friday to pick up a front pannier set he ordered for me. I will remember to ask him about dynamo hubs. He may have some in stock. His is a very specialized boutique-like shop. He does have some random stuff.
Prepaid cards shouldn't be a problem to find. I assume you're flying into LAX. I'm sure you can make a purchase there. Might not be the cheapest though.
The brooks saddle was a used purchase. Previous owner hardly rode it. It is not broken in. I had one for 7 years and I know what a "broken in brooks" feels like. This one feels pretty unused. It does have some superficial scuffs on the leather. Probably from rubbing along a wall. I'm sure it can be polished and treated. It is a standard size. Not the shorter one. Of course I can send you pics
I am putting together a new touring bike. Like everyone, eternal search for the perfect saddle. I had a brooks. I liked the brooks, after I rode it for 3 years. Evan let me try the selle anatomica the day I picked up the brooks saddle. Honestly, I had the brooks on my bike for maybe 20 minutes. Selle makes a wonderful "no break-in" time saddle in my opinion.

Schmidt SON dynamo hub

Hey Raymond,

Thanks for all your advice, I am looking for Schmidt dynamo hub fit WTB laser 26" 32 hole front wheel. It would be great if you could ask Evan about dynamo hub, light & cup phone charger. I will read up on selle atomical sounds very good, worried Brooks may be uncomfortable for a few weeks. Flying into LAX, is it possible to cycle out of airport to Longbeach?

I'll absolutely speak with

I'll absolutely speak with him about the hubs.
Cycling from lax to long beach is not easy and not pretty. Approx 25-30 miles depending on route. Goes through some gritty parts of LA. City streets. Some bike trails. City navigating. No one route better or worse than another.
Let me know if you need some help when you arrive. I might still be in town. I'm still planning my trip. Trying to figure out bike policies on trains.
Just joined site because of some very friendly people who helped me on my last tour when I needed it the most. Trying to emulate. I admire your ambition. Sounds like an amazing journey is ahead of you.

Schmidt hub

Shipment of Dynamo hub will take 3-5 days. Better to order a week before you leave. If you decide to purchase in states. Any shop that will order this part for you will usually ask for full payment upon ordering. It's not a part shops carry or even sell often. And most shops that will order this part for you should have the familiarity and skills to install for you. Spoke with manager of the Bicycle Stand about your situation. She said they can absolutely assist you.

I believe they order parts through Peter white cycles.

Most shops if not all have skilled technicians. And there are countless shops in LA.
Good luck!! I am more than happy to help.

Dynamo hub

Hi Ray,

Thanks for asking about hub, Nicole from The Bicycle Stand emailed, I am waiting to see if she can purchase phone charger as well as Schmidt SON dynamo hub. Nicole mentioned there may be a more cost effective hub, waiting for details. Can you send a pic of imperial saddle & how much you want to sell it for? I just put a serfas seat on do you think this will be comfy enough for touring? I saw Brooks saddle with cut out, do you think these are better? Serfas has vents which has been more comfortable.

My plan is to go straight from airport to Long Beach, do you know if I can go by train & can I assemble bike or does it have to stay in box? Hoping we can catch up, where will you be on 14th October?

LA to Long Beach

Well....in the world of bike touring anything is possible. Public transport is ineffective if it exists at all in Los angeles. If you have no one meeting you or helping you once you arrive in lax I'd be more than happy to help you out with some vehicle assistance. I'm leaving for a short 5 day ride tomorrow. Just checking out new set up on bike. But I'll be in LA area on the 14th. If you don't need my help I'd suggest assembling bike and riding into long beach. I feel my remark about the ride to long beach was discouraging. Sorry. Lived here too long. A bit jaded. It's a relatively easy bike ride. Flat for the most part. 25 miles. Probably take a couple of hours. Short ride along the coast and then its an urban ride the rest of the way.
If you're looking for some company on your tour or a part of it, I'd be very interested. Getting to yosemite and the options there have really piqued my interest.
I've never owned a serfas saddle. I agree with the cut outs being more comfortable. Especially for women. The argument for padded seats vs minimalist leather saddles goes on and on. it sounds counterintuitive but for long distance touring I find minimalist zero padding leather saddles like the brooks to be more effective. Longest I've ridden on my sella is 50 miles and I felt like I could keep going. No soreness or numbness. Without padded shorts also. Sella anatomica titanico.
You can have brooks saddle for $80 USD. It's exactly what I payed for it. Not sure how to send a pic here. If you're interested, send me an email. Rayrae@gmail.com
Good luck with it all.

Brooks pre softened fem saddle...low break in time...virtually bombproof.
