Unsafe streets to WS Hosts

We have a dilemma . We are WS hosts near Houston ,Tx, USA but the streets to our location are very congested and not cyclist. friendly. especially with historically inattentive local. drivers .We just had a cyclist. struck. by a hit and run driver. on the way to our place . Do we continue to invite WS guests knowing the routes. to our place. are unsafe or should. we remove ourselves. from WS. We do not currently. have a vehicle. suited. to collect incoming. guests. on theoutskirts. of town to bring them safely. to our place. What do you think ? Your opinions. are valuable. to us. Please. help us consider. this important. decision .. Thanks
Jeff and Dotty

Not your fault

First, I hope the cyclist you mention being hit is more or less okay. Hit-and-run drivers have become a national bane.

It looks like y'all are excellent hosts, judging by your feedback. I take it all your guests haven't been hit?

Houston is, as you know, a huge urban sprawl. Anyone bicycling through the area HAS to be aware of that. If they weren't before they got close they certainly have to be once they penetrate the edges and pass through.

It looks like there are hosts scattered all around Houston, most concentrated inside the 610 Loop.

All that to say, you are one of many. Tourists knowingly make their choices. It's not as if you have laid out bait and hope to trap a bicyclist on a treacherous stretch of road. The reality is, nearly ALL American streets are treacherous.

Re: Not your fault

Mark,
We are outside the 610 loop, but the streets. are not bike friendly. Fortunately only one guest has been struck so far but there have been other close calls .

I'm sorry to hear that - I

I'm sorry to hear that - I just read the reference. I hope your guest is recovering OK. Without wishing to diminish the risk I think the vast majority of urban areas through Asia, Africa and Latin America would present more danger to a cyclist than your corner of Texas - if we all withdrew there'd be far fewer hosts around (but that wouldn't stop the tourers).

Each cyclist is ultimately responsible for how much risk they are willing to take on. You can help by making sure they are well informed; when you accept a guest include a paragraph about the problems unique to your area and include some advice about what to look out for and the best route to get to your home. Forewarned is forearmed.

Re: Not your fault

Mark,
We did send him down what we felt was the safest route and he still got hit. I guess that's. all we can do without being able to pick them up. We just want to be good hosts and hate that we aren't in the safest area to get here. I guess it gives us another reason to treat them extra special. when they do arrive uninjured or otherwise .

Well you seem like great

Well you seem like great hosts. All you can do is give your guests as much information as possible so that they can make the most informed decisions. I've had two guests subsequently killed in road accidents in South America but I don't think withdrawing or advising everyone not to cycle here is the solution.

As a cyclist, you're an easy

As a cyclist, you're an easy victim. I think, we all know that. So don't worry and continue hosting! All the best!

Unsafe streets?

Your guest has been hit by a car because, be sure, the driver considered him to be a homeless. There are lot of people who hate the homeless and don’t hesitate to use violence to get this feeling satisfied.

If you witnessed the accident

If you witnessed the accident or subsequently spoke to the driver I assume you have reported this information to the relevant authority.
